About Seeger Fest:
Seeger Fest is a five-day festival of free events taking place July 17-21 in New York City and the Hudson Valley to honor and commemorate the lives of revered folk musician Pete Seeger and his wife, Toshi Seeger. The events will consist of large concerts, film screenings, a memorial service, sing-a-longs, and a photo exhibit.
Musicians include Judy Collins, Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary, Holly Near, Dar Williams, Amanda Palmer, Anti-Flag and Steve Earle among others. The festival will include folk, hip-hop, punk, reggae and indie-rock artists who worked with Pete Seeger and stand behind social causes.
Seeger Fest is being produced by Pete and Toshi Seeger’s grandson, Kitama Cahill-Jackson, making it the only Pete Seeger tribute event being produced by a family member.
Greetings Friends and Relatives of my friend Pete Seeger:
I am deeply honored, and feel blessed to have my words read here tonight. Not a lot of people have been with me from the beginning of my imprisonment. Pete was there in the very first days and weeks. He and I would talk on the phone and he was always kind, solid and true. I must say that I am not sure I could ever find a friend like him again, Pete was one of a kind in so many different ways. He stood for me, but he also fought for many Native Americans. Pete was an honorary NATIVE American and my people will always hold him in great regard.
I was sitting in my cell, struggling to find a way to honor Pete through this statement. How do I find the right words to explain how close to my heart and soul is Pete Seeger? Then it came over me so clear…. almost as if he was talking in my ear just like we used to do on the phone…Pete would want me to use this time to inspire YOU; to remember that it is YOU that holds the very future and freedoms of mankind in your grasp. If people like yourselves do not stand up and speak out, than those forces that wrongfully take the rights of men, women and children, will continue forever.
With all sincerity, and with all the thoughts and prayers of these 39 unjust years in prison, I strongly encourage all of you to be as active as you possibly can be, because not only humans are held as prisoners for corporate, political, and monetary gains, but the very Earth and Nature itself is held captive to these forces. Stand up and speak UP for whatever touches your heart. My Friend Pete Seeger gave his life fighting for causes. He took time away from his family and friends to stand up on a stage and sing out for justice. Pete made a difference in this world; you can make a difference too.
I remember him saying one day to me that he was just a hobo, and if a hobo could get the message across to someone else, then no one has an excuse for not speaking out. So you see, you don’t have to be a great leader, or hold a position of power, all you need to create change is a voice, and if you cannot speak: write, and if you cannot write; just shake your head NO!
BUT FOR PETE’S SAKE— DO SOMETHING.
I miss my dear friend Pete. I will forever hold his spirit in my heart. I will always be grateful for the years he supported me, and was my friend, and I will never, ever forget him or time his family gave up being with him, so he could fight for me.
May the Great Spirit bless you with the things you need and enough to share with others.
Your friend always
